DESCRIPTION

This module aims to prepare learners to address child-specific needs related to potential child-specific vulnerabilities and to assess the child’s level of understanding of the situation in the different stages of the asylum process. This module also provides knowledge on the concept of the best interests of the child, the legal framework, and specific rights of children, as well as their vulnerabilities, throughout the asylum process, for all officials who are likely to come into direct or indirect contact with children.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify indicators of child-specific vulnerabilities within the asylum process and their special needs

  2. Identify the child-specific rights in the asylum process in line with the international and EU legal framework
  3. Identify the safeguards applicable to children and their specific needs in the asylum process

    Skill

  4. Select appropriate communication settings to facilitate the child’s participation in the asylum process

    Competence

  5. Propose relevant actions to be taken based on the special needs and the best interests of the child within the asylum process.

 

DELIVERY METHOD

The module is delivered through a blended learning methodology (online, face-to-face and independent learning). Online learning uses learning activities that assess progress toward the learning outcomes and face-to-face sessions focus on child-specific needs related to potential child-specific vulnerabilities that require discussions and work groups.

 

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

The assessment strategy consists of a single case scenario based on a video, with 6 questions covering tasks such as identifying vulnerability indicators, proposing actions to implement rights and safeguards, and appraising understanding and rapport-building with a child.
