DESCRIPTION

The aim of this module aims to provide learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct asylum interviews, assess evidence in cases of victims of gender-based violence, determine if the applicant qualifies for refugee status in line with the Qualifications Regulation and justify the decision in fact and in law.
This module focuses on developing the knowledge and skills needed to handle asylum cases involving gender-based violence. The online component is structured into four sub-modules covering the challenges of managing such cases, techniques for conducting sensitive interviews with victims, methods of evidence and risk assessment, and the qualification of victims for refugee status under the Qualifications Regulation. Learners are introduced to core concepts of gender and gender-based violence, explore practical approaches to interviewing and case preparation, and work through evidence gathering, credibility assessment, and risk evaluation using case studies. The module concludes with a 16-hour face-to-face session, where participants practice interview techniques, evidence assessment, and decision-making on gender-based violence cases through applied exercises.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:
  1. Apply advanced interviewing strategies to plan, prepare, conduct and document interviews with victims or potential victims of gender-based violence.
  2. Evaluate evidence, interview transcripts and specific relevant Country of Origin Information against legal requirements for cases of victims or potential victims of gender-based violence.
  3. Justify, in fact and in law, decisions in cases of victims or potential victims of gender-based violence.

DELIVERY METHOD

The module is delivered through a blended learning methodology (online, face-to-face and independent learning). Online learning uses learning activities that assess progress toward the learning outcomes and face-to-face sessions on managing complex cases of gender based violence that require discussions and work groups.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

The assessment strategy is based on a practice-oriented case study where learners apply the module’s knowledge and skills to design an interview, analyse evidence, assess credibility and risk, and draft a justified asylum decision, supported by feedback and consultation with trainers.
